DEPRESSED CANDIDATE BEATS UP RESIDENT

Pekalongan, C Java, April 16 (ANTARA) - Depressed by his poor showing in last week's legislative elections in Pekalongan, Central Java, National Mandate Party (PAN) candidate Agus Panut (38) beat up Suyanto (33) severely on Wednesday for allegedly mocking him.

Budi Kristanto (43), Panut's elder brother, said here on Thursday his brother had been isolating himself at home since the election. "But we did not know immediately that he had beaten up Suyanto because it happened outside," Kristanto said.

Panut was believed to have become depressed after learning he had not secured enough votes during the legislative elections last week.

Kristanto said Suyanto was manhandled on Wednesday (April 5) at 10.30 pm when the victim and other residents were gathered at a security post.

"We heard that Panut attacked Sugyanto because the latter had mocked him," he said.

Agus Panut, he said, initially hoped to win about 50 to 100 votes at the Sapura village polling station but it turned out that he got only five votes.

Before the election, Panut had distributed a total of Rp2.4 million in cash among local residents in the hope they would vote for him, Kristanto said.
