INDONESIAN NAVY'S WARSHIP ARRIVES IN LEBANON
Beirut, April 16 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy's warship KRI Diponegoro-365 arrived in Lebanon on Thursday to join the United Nations peace-keeping force in the Middle Eastern country.
On arrival in Lebanon, the Garuda Contingent (Konga) XXVIII-A Maritime Taskforce as part of the Maritime Task Force (MTF) of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was greeted in a military ceremony attended by Indonesian Eastern Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Lili Supramono, Indonesian ambassador to Lebanon Bagas Hapsoro and Lebanon's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Moallam.
KRI Diponegoro's commander, Lt Col Arsyad Abdullah, said the ship had made calls at Cochin in India, Salalah in Oman and Port Said in Egypt before arriving in Lebanon after a journey of 6,555 sea miles.
The ship will join the UNIFIL's MTF under the Command Task Force (CTF) 448 where several countries such as France, Spain, Turky, Greece, Italy, Belgium and Germany had also joined.
Arsyad said KRI Diponegoro would be assigned in Zone 1 of the four zones in Lebanese waters put under the responsibility of MTF/UNIFIL. He said "we will be there with Belgium."
Among the requirements for joining the UNIFIL's MTF were that the ship had to be able to carry a helicopter, carry out SAR operations and conduct refuelling at sea, possess first-class health facilities and a real-time combat management system.
Besides having to be able to conduct self-protection the ship must also have the capability of identifying friends or foes, various weapons and capability to help the Lebanese navy.
The KRI Diponegoro was also carrying a BO-105 NV-414 helicopter.
The Konga XXVIII Maritime Taskforce is led by Col. Aan Kurnia while the ship is led by Lt.Col. Arsyad Abdullah.
