KALLA: GOLKAR UNLIKELY TO NAME PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - The general chairman of Golkar Party, Jusuf Kalla, said with only around 14 percent of votes collected it was impossible for the party to name a candidate for the presidential election later in July.

"With its vote collection of only around 14 percent naming a presidential candidate will be impossible because the votes may not win up to 20 percent of parliamentary seats (needed to be able to name an own candidate)," he said after a consultation meeting here on Thursday.

Kalla said the consultation meeting this time was not intended for making decisions. The decision about presidential candidacy or coalition will be made during the national leadership meeting on April 23, he said.

He however said that the meeting had instructed three things for the coalition namely that it must benefit the nation and the state as well as parties involved in it.

"If the Democratic Party would coalesce with Golkar, the coalition must benefit both parties. If it only benefits one party it is impossible," he said.

The third is that the coalition must assure victory and later good implementation of the administration, he said.

"That is the mandate of the meeting," he said.

Kalla said the meeting did not decide anything because the questions of presidential nomination and coalition would be answered in the special national leadership meeting.

The Democratic Party remains leading in vote collection according to vote counting, beating heavyweights Golkar and the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
