GARUDA STOPS FLYING TO DARWIN

Brisbane, Apr 16 (ANTARA) - After almost 30 years of Darwin-Denpasar straight flights, Indonesia's flag carrier airline company Garuda Indonesia decided to stop flying over the route as of April 22, 2009.

Garuda's decision to stop flying to the capital of the Northern Territory, came up during a conversation between ANTARA and the Indonesian Consul in Darwin Harbangan Napitupulu on Thursday.

"Frankly speaking, many Indonesians here were disappointed with the Garuda decision to stop flying to Dawin from Denpasar. If you asked for my opinion, I'd rather reduce the flight frequency between the two points from three to two a week, like the condition before May 2009," he said.

A negative reaction also came from Northern Territory (NT) administration officials because Garuda's services in the area since 1980 had a positive effect on the relations between Indonesia and the Norhtern Territory, Harbangan said.

The reason for the discontinuation of Garuda's Denpasar-Darwin flight was economic slump, although the flights of low-cost Australian airline companies Jet Star and Virgin Blue had raised their flight frequency to Denpasar from many points in Australia.

Other factors which had affected Garuda's competitiveness was capacity surplus, because low-cost airline companies like Jet Star is operating A-320 planes with 177 seats plying the Darwin-Denpasar route every day.

Two years ago, the Darwin-Denpasar route was covered only twice a week by Garuda Indonesia, and twice a week by Australia's Qantas operating aircraft with 147 seats.

Since a year ago, Qantas stopped flying to Denpasar, and replaced by Airnorth operating places with 75 seats.
