FM EXPECTS ASEAN+3 SUMMIT TO BE RESUMED IN ONE MONTH

Jakarta, Apr 16 (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda expects the postponed summit of ASEAN members and their dialog partners which was originally planned to take place in the Thai resort town of Pattaya last week can be resumed in one month's time.

"It can certainly be resumed in one month's time even if it is not easy to set the proper date for 16 heads of state/government," he said here on Thursday.

The minister said he had discussed the matter with ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan.

He said all ASEAN member states had expressed their readiness to help the Thai government which is currently the rotating ASEAN chairman resume the ASEAN+3 and East Asian Summits.

"We all have the interest that the ASEAN+3 and East Asia Summits can be redesigned immediately," he said.

He said there were a number of urgent agenda that need to be approved by the heads of state/government in the region.

The ASEAN+3 meeting will among others discuss the Chiang Mai Initiative -- the one which aims for creation of a network of Bilateral Swap Arrangements (BSAs) among ASEAN+3 countries.

The ASEAN+3 meeting will also be important to stabilize the money market in the region as well as to restore sluggish trade and investment as a result of the global economic turmoil.

The Thai government decided to postpone the summits last Saturday after anti-government protesters broke into the summit venue in Pattaya.
ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) groups Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
