BUKAT BLOCK EXPECTED TO START PRODUCTION IN 2010

Jakarta, Apr 17 (ANTARA) - The government expects the Bukat Block in Ambalat waters off the East Kalimantan coast to start producing oil and gas next year.

Speaking to the press after dedicating an integrated oil and gas investment service center here on Friday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said he would soon meet executives of the comany that would operate the block, ENI.

"Acccording to the results of preliminary studies, the block holds quite large oil and gas reserves," he said.

The minister said ENI would conduct a test on its first production in the next two to three months.

Director General of Oil and Gas at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Evita Legowo meanwhile said the block was expected to start production in 2010 after the test had been completed.

Quoting the previous estimate of production from five drilled wells, she said quite large oil and gas reserves had been found in the Aster field.

"We predict that they can produce 30,000-40,000 barrels per day," she said.

Yet, she added that the government must be careful in developing the block because it was located in the Indonesia-Malaysia borders.***
