AKBAR READY TO BECOME RUNNING MATE OF YUDHOYONO IN PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Jember, Apr 16 (ANTARA) - Former General Chairman of Golkar Party Akbar Tanjung had expressed readiness to become the running mate of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his attempt for the presidency for the second time this year.
"I am ready to team up with Yudhoyono, if Golkar party wants me to run for that post in the party's special national leadership meeting," Akbar Tanjung said on the sidelines of his visit to Al-Qodiri Islamic boarding school in Jember district, East Java, on Thursday evening.

According to him, the special national leadership meeting will be held on April 23 to discuss proposed names of the party's best cadres to compete in the upcoming presidential election.

"The Golkar's cadres to run for for presidential and vice presidential posts will be decided in the party's national leadership meeting," he said.

He said his visit to Al-Qadiri Islamic boarding school in Jember was just for a get together with the management and students of the schools in addition to praying for his running for vice presidential post in the upcoming presidential race.

"I've been longing to meet with Kyai Muzaki, a noted cleric and also owner of the school, to pray for my determination to run for vice presidential post in the presidential election," he said.

For this year's vice presidential and presidential election, he admitted that he still had an opportunity to run for vice presidential post if supported by the Golkar party.
"I will ask for approval of party's chapters in some regions to support my running for vice presidential post to team up with Yudhoyono," he said.
Unless supported by the party, Akbar said he would not take part in the race as what Yusuf Kalla had done in the 2004 general election, he said.
