RI, FRENCH DEFENSE MINISTERS MEET IN PARIS
London, April 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Soedarsono visited France on April 16-17 and discussed a number of issues of common concern with his French counterpart, Herve Morin, according to a report from Paris.
The two ministers talked among other things about Iran's nuclear power program, Indonesian troops in Lebanon, and efforts to intensify cooperation in the procurement of military hardware, an official at the Indonesian embassy in Paris said on Thursday.
Sudarsono was in France at the invitation of the French defense minister, Kusuma Nursiawati Habir, minister counsellor of the Indonesian embassy said.
Minister Sudarsono's working visit to Paris, April 15-16, 2009, was also aimed at developing, increasing and strengthening the bilateral relations between Indonesia and France in the defense field.
France appreciated Indonesian troops' active participation in Lebanon, and hoped that the presence of Indonesian troops could be extended until the security situation in Lebanon was fully recovered.
As part of the bilateral cooperation, both defense ministers agreed to explore concrete cooperation such as education and training for military personnel, field communication, defense industry development, seminars and bilateral dialogs.
Both ministers agreed to set up a committee to follow up the implementation of the planned concrete cooperation.
On the defense industry development, the French minister said that there was a possibility that a French bank could provide funds for the defense industry development which would also involve Indonesian companies.
Minister Sudarsono also met with managers of Renault Trucks Defense (RTD), a supplier of tanks for Indonesia's peace keeping force in Lebanon.
They discussed prospects of cooperation in meeting Indonesia's need for military hardware, and explored cooperation between RTD and Indonesian companies in the production of armored vehicles.
There are two French companies operating in Indonesia in the defense industry, namely European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) and Thales.
Last March 2009, Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Djoko Santoso saw Indonesian warship KRI Diponegoro-365 off. The warship left for Lebanon as a maritime task force of Indonesia's Garuda military contingent (Konga) XXVIII-A to join MTF-UNIFIL (Marine Task Farce of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).
