PLANE CRASH IN PAPUA, PASSENGERS' FATE STILL UNKNOWN
Jayapura, Papua, April 17 (ANTARA) - The fate of passengers of a Mimika Air plane reported to have crashed during a flight from Ilaga to Mulia in Papua on Friday morning was still unknown at noon.
The crash site is believed to be somewhere in the Mount Gergaji area. The plane belonging to the Mimika district administration, was piloted by Nay May Linn Aung of Myanmar and Makmur of Indonesia as co-pilot.
The passengers were Marthen Jitmau (secretary of the Puncak Jaya General Elections Commission/KPU), Rev. Melkias Kiwak, Herman Snanfi (chairman of the Puncak Jaya general elections supervisory board), Willem Mayau, Lasarus Wonda, Ruben Murib, Temina Murib and two children whose identities were still unknown.
Hanock Ibo, deputy district head of Puncak Jaya, confirmed to ANTARA on Friday that the Pilatus aircraft had left Ilaga at 10.15 a.m. local time, and was expected to arrive at Mulia 30 minutes later.
He said bad weather in the mountainous area hampered search and rescue efforts.
Hanock Ibo said he could not confirm the exact location of the accident, although there was a report from a pilot of MAF (Christian Mission Aviation Fellowship) who passed the area, that he had seen shiny objects on the ground which could be the wreckage of the ill-fated Pilatus plane.
A search effort might be conducted on Saturday (April 18), when the weather was expected to be fine, Hanock Ibo said.
In 2006, a Trigana plane with nine passengers on board, felt down around Mount Gergaji, Papua.
On April 9 this year, six people were killed when a cargo plane carrying essential food supplies crashed in poor weather after aborting an attempt to land in Wamena in Papua Province.
In January 2008, an Aviastar Twin Otter crashed in Paniai district, Papua, after it skidded off the runway of Sugapa Airport, killing one of its 15 passengers. In February 2005, 14 people died after a Cassa 212 plane belonging to the National Police went down in Mararena River in Jayapura, Papua Province.
