PALEMBANG SCHOOLS TO SERVE AS "TRASH BANKS"

Palembang, S Sumatra, Apr 17 (ANTARA) - The Palembang city government has prepared 100 schools to become so-called "trash banks" capable of managing their own garbage properly.

Each of the schools would receive Rp300,000 in capital to start the routine collection of their respective trash, the head of the Palembang Municipal Environment Office, Kemas Abubakar, said on Friday.

Abubakar said the internal students organization (OSIS) or cooperative at each of the schools would use the funds to buy trash collected by students.

The trash would later be sold to real garbage collectors, he said.

The OSIS or cooperatives will only buy non-organic trash in the form of paper scraps and used plastic bottles and that trash cans will be made available at each of the schools, he said.

The funds needed to finance the project come from state fertilizer company PT Pupuk Sriwijaya as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), he said.

He said the development of "trash banks " was part of the local government's efforts to regain an Adipura environmental award.

"What is more, clean schools are one of the deciding factors to win the award, in addition to clean offices, markets and roads," he said.
