PRESIDENT ORDERS MINISTER TO TACKLE PAPUA PLANE CRASH IMMEDIATELY
Jakarta, April 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday ordered Transportation Minister Jusman Syafei Djamal to have the Mimika Air plane that crashed in a Papua jungle earlier in the day and the people on board evacuated immediately.
Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said at a press conference the President had asked the minister to coordinate evacuation and rescue stages with the offices concerned such as local administrations and military/police commands.
The transport ministry earlier announced that an emergency locator beacon aircraft of the Pilatus PC-6 plane was detected around Sinap mountain.
The plane first lost contact at around 10.30 local time. Until now local search and rescue team was still coordinating with parties concerned with regard to finding the location shown by the ELBA signal. So far it has not been known if the eight people on board are alive or dead.
The plane was reported to carry elections logistics through an Ilaga-Mulia flight route with eight people on board and two crew.
The director general of air transportation has already ordered all planes flying in the area to help monitor location of the crash.
The plane with a register number PK-LTJ was operated by the Mimika administration in cooperation with GT Air.
In the press conference Andi also conveyed President Yudhoyono's appreciation to local elections officials who might have died in the incident.
President Yudhoyono also expressed appreciation to the crew of the plane that had helped in the implementation of the legislative elections by carrying elections logistics to remote areas.
"In connection with the crash President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also expressed deep condolences to the families of the crew and passengers," he said.
