RI`S KRI DIPONEGORO TO JOIN MTF-UNIFIL SOON
Beirut, April 18 (ANTARA) - Indonesian warship KRI Diponegoro-365 which arrived here as the Garuda Contingent (Konga XXVIII)'s Maritime Task Force recently will soon join the Marine Task Force of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (MTF-UNIFIL).
"We have informed all contingents in MTF-UNIFIL about the presence of KRI Diponegoro," MTF-UNIFIL Commander Rear Admiral Jean-Thierry Pynoo said here on Friday night.
Pynon told the press at a cocktail party on board the KRI Diponegoro at Beyrouth port on Friday night, he had gathered the chiefs of all contingents in MTF-UNIFIL to plan a joint operation in Lebanese waters.
"We need to coordinate and communicate on everything related to the MTF-UNIFIL joint operation plan immediately. Coordination and communication among MTF members is necessary because we are made up of several contingents from a number of countries," Pynoo said.
Meanwhile, UNIFIL Commander Maj Gen Claudio Graziano said on the occasion the KRI Diponegoro-365 was a welcome reinforcement of MTF-UNIFIL's capacity to perform its peace mission in Lebanese waters.
"There is no problem with coordination with contingents from other countries because communication and coordination is under one command and we use the same language," he said.
In Lebanon, KRI Diponegoro will join the the MTF UNIFIL's Commander Task Force (CTF)-448 which already comprises warships from France, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Germany.
He said each contingent would be responsible for a certain area in Lebanese waters which were divided into four zones.
KRI Diponegoro-365 as Konga XXVIII's Maritime Task Force would be posted in Zone I together with the Belgium contingent.
The Indonesian warship, equipped among other things with a BO-105 NV-414 helicopter, arrived at Beyrouth port in Lebanon on April 16, 2009 and will head to its operation zone on April 19.
National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief General Djoko Santoso said in Jakarta recently that it was for the first time that TNI, especially the Navy, had sent a maritime task force to join a UN peace keeping force.
He said KRI Diponegoro would serve as part of MTF UNIFIL for six months until October 2009, and if the mission was successful, TNI would send another warship.
UNIFIL was created by the UN Security Council in 1978 to ensure the withdrawl of Israeli troops from Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Lebanese government in restoring its effective authority in the area.***
