RESCUE TEAM FINDS MIMIKA AIR CRASH SITE
Jayapura, Indonesia, April 18 (ANTARA) - A search and rescue team found the debris of the Mimika Air plane that crashed on Friday on a slope of Mount Gergaji at 9:25 local time on Saturday morning.
The plane carried 11 people, including a crew of two, who are all believed to have been killed.
Puncak Jaya deputy district head Hanock Ibom, when contacted by phone from Jayapura, said the discovery was reported by pilot Gustav who flew on a Primair plane over the area on Saturday morning and saw smoke was still coming out of the debris of the ill-fated plane.
The Mimika Air plane, belonging to the Mimika district administration, crashed in the Mount Gergaji area on Friday during a flight from Ilaga to Mulia district in Papua.
Hanock Ibo said rescue workers had gathered at Ilaga to evacuate the bodies of nine passengers and two crew members.
"We hope the weather will remain clear to make the evacuation process smooth," Ibo said, adding that a Trigana Air plane also crashed at the same location in 2006, killing all of its nine passengers, including Puncak Jaya district administration official Wirdha Fakaubun.
He said the ill-fated plane, piloted by Nay May Linn Aung of Myanmar and Makmur of Indonesia as co-pilot, left Ilaga at 10.15 a.m. local time on Frida and was expected to arrive at Mulia 30 minutes later but then it was reported missing.
According the Puncak Jaya deputy district head, the passengers were Marthen Jitmau (secretary of the Puncak Jaya General Elections Commission/KPU), Rev. Melkias Kiwa, Herman Snanfi (chairman of the Puncak Jaya general elections supervisory board), Welem Ayau, Lasarus Wonda, Ruben Murib, Emina Murib and her two children.
Friday's plane crash in Papua came less than two week after a cargo plany carrying essential food supplies crashed in poor weather in Wamena, killing six people.
In January 2008, an Aviastar Twin Otter crashed in Paniai district, Papua, after it skidded off the runway of Sugapa Airport, killing one of its 15 passengers. In February 2005, 14 people died after a Cassa 212 plane belonging to the National Police went down in Mararena River in Jayapura, Papua Province.***
