GOLKAR SEEMS UNPREPARED TO BECOME COALITION`S BACKBONE : OBSERVER

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, April 18 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party chairman Jusuf Kalla's statement that it was not possible for Golkar to nominate its own presidential candidate is part of an attempt to prevent the party from becoming the main axis of a coalition, a political observer said.

Ari Diwipayana, a political science lecturer at Gajah Mada University, was commenting on Saturday on Jusuf Kalla recent remark that it was impossible for Golkar to nominate its own presidential candidate because the party gained only 14 percent of the votes in the April 9, 2009 legislative elections.

"According to the law, Jusuf Kalla's statement is correct because for a political party to nominate its presidential candidate, it should gain at least 20 percent of the votes. But the party can coalesce with others in order to nominate its candidate," Ari Dwipayana said.

According to him, the statement made by Jusuf Kalla was strange enough, but it gave a signal that Golkar did not want to be the main axis of a coalition.

"If there is a coalition among political parties, Golkar should embrace a number of parties to nominate its presidential candidate by becoming the main axis," he said.

He added that if Golkar only nominated a vice president, it would be the party's effort to avoid becoming the main axis of a coalition.***
