HOME MINISTER INSTRUCTED TO ASK KPU ABOUT VOTES TABULATION

Jakarta, April 20 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto to ask the General Elections Commission (KPU) for a clarification on the tabulation of the vote tallies of the recent legislative elections.

The president issued the instruction at a limited cabinet meeting to evaluate the legislative elections at his office here on Monday.

"I ask the home affairs minister to communicate with the KPU about the ballot tabulation and ascertain whether the timeline set for completion of the job can be met," the president said.

The head of state said ballot counts at polling station level might be slow but at the recapitulation level it should run faster.

"But it is better for us to be proactive, although it is the domain of KPU," he said, adding that this did not mean the government wanted to interfere but just to make sure that the ballot count could be completed on time.

The president raised the ballot counting matter at a limited cabinet meeting following reports that the ballot count conducted by the KPU was proceeding at snail's pace.

The limited cabinet meeting which started at 11 on Monday morning was attended among others by Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso, Attorney General Hendarman Supanji, and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Syamsir Siregar.

On the occasion, the president also asked the National Police chief and the Attorney General to report on the legal settlement of people's complaints or lawsuits about irregularities in the recent legislative elections.

"We want everything processed well and seriously by the police and Attorney General's Office," the president at a limited cabinet meeting to evaluate the legislative elections at the presidential office.

But the president added that the government was expected to be well responsive to the matters.

"We have to process everything according to law, and to prove that no single case cannot go under legal process," the president said.

The head of state asserted that he had received reports on a number of violations in the legislative elections but the legal domain was the responsibility the law enforcers.***
