WESTERN COUNTRIES URGED TO DROP PLAN TO STOP TIMBER TRADING
Denpasar, Apr 20 (ANTARA) - World Growth, an American non governmental organization, reminded the United Nations of insisting western countries to stop a planned halt in the trade of timber and forestry products.
The remark was made by GATT and World Growth Chairman Alan Oxley in a meeting of the UN Forum on Forestry in New York, the USA.
"At present, US, European and Australian leaders are considering to continue a curtail in timber production, even there has been a commitment not to continue a curtail in trade by those leaders in the G-20 summit," he said in a press release made available to Antara in Denpasar on Monday afternoon.
With the pretext of carrying out 'Green Policy", such a limitation in the trade of wooden commodity will however create a condition which may result in poverty in the world.
"In the context of the world economy, this policy will however curtail the export from Asia, Africa and Latin America. In our latest report, it seems that the limitation will create a contra-productive trade barrier environmentally and economically," he said.
"Furthermore, this study shows that in many ways, sustainable forest practices in developing countries are not merely aimed at improving the standard of life, but also protecting the environment," he said.
If the desired target was to lower the emission of green house effect by attempting the third world economy to grow well, those in the United States should work hard to make sustainable forest programs in the third world revive, he said.
