RI SUFFERS RP58 T IN LOSSES DUE TO BAD SANITATION

Jakarta, Apr 20 (ANTARA) - The country suffers Rp56 trillion in losses or 2.3 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) due to bad sanitation, a minister said.

"The losses caused by treatment of bad sanitation-related diseases are quite big. The losses would not happen if we had a good sanitation," Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said here on Monday.

To improve sanitation the ministry signed agreements with 14 district and municipal governments including two from Central Java and East Java on Monday with governors of the two provinces attending.

The minister reminded the regional governments of the need to improve sanitation, saying good sanitation would help them attract investments.

Good sanitation could be achieved if it was supported by five main pillars, including good access to waste treatment units, people's and business world's participation, and central and regional governments' commitment, he said.

He said many donor countries had offered grants to improve sanitation in Indonesia.

A number of cities including Medan and Surakarta had benefited from such grants, while other cities such as Yogyakarta and Bandung still had to be encouraged to do that, he said.

He said 30 cities in nine provinces were trying hard to improve their sanitation and a technical team of the ministry would familiarize other 226 cities with good sanitation.

The government allocated Rp600 billion for the sanitation sector every year, while Rp6 trillion in funds was needed to achieve standard sanitation, he said.
