INDONESIA SUBMITS RATIFICATION INSTRUMENT ON UNCTOC
Jakarta, Apr 21 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government submitted the ratification instrument on the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crimes (UNCTOC) at a Special Treaty Event in Vienna, Austria, April 20, 2009, it was reported here Tuesday.
the Indonesian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Austria reported that on the occasion, the Indonesian government was represented by ad interim Chard d'Affaires at the Indonesian permanent representative office in Vienna, Rainer Luhanapessy.
At the event held on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, Rainer Luhanapessy was accompanied by Director for International Security and Disarmament of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Desra Percaya.
UNCTOC was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives on January 12, 2009, under Law No.5 2009 on the approval of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
Under Article 38 point (1) of UNCTOC, the stipulations in UNCTOC take into effect and bind Indonesia 90 days after the handing over of the ratification instrument.
The handing over of the UNTOC ratification instrument constitutes the manifestation of Indonesia's commitment to prevention and eradication of organized transnational crimes.
After submitting the instrument, Indonesia can take broader advantage of international cooperation in making efforts to investigate, examine and demand against money laundering, corruption and crimes against judicial process and serious transnational crimes involving an organized group of perpetrators.
With the effectiveness of UNCTOC, Indonesia can maximally take measures to eradicate corruption and return assets resulted from corruption.
This will be complementary to the use of international instruments in which Indonesia has become a party in UNCAC (United Nations Convention against Corruption, at international level), ASEAN Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (at regional level) and bilateral agreements which had been made by the Indonesian government. ***5***
