PORK-TAINTED BEEF JERKY BELIEVED CIRCULATING IN GARUT

Garut, Indonesia, April 21 (ANTARA) - The health service of Garut district, West Java, believes that pork-tainted beef jerky (dendeng) and shredded fried meat (abon) may currently be circulating in markets in the region.

"May be shop owners are hiding the products for the time being as our officers are now conducting sweeps in markets suspected of selling pork jerky and shredded fried meat with beef labels," Head of Garut's Health Service Office, Wowo Karsono said here on Tuesday.

He said officers of late were conducting impromptu visits to traditional markets and shops to search for pork-tainted meat following the discovery of the products in the market in several regions.

Authorities have discovered that five companies selling 'dendeng' and 'abon' have been using pork instead of beef in their products which are not allowed for consumption (haram) based on Islamic law.

The pork-tainted products were found in the provinces of Jambi, Jakarta, Central Java (Semarang), East Java (Surabaya) and West Java (Bogor and Bandung).

"After conducting DNA tests on 35 samples collected from traditional markets across the country, we discovered that five of them were made from pork instead of beef," Husniah Runiana Thamrin said last week.

The products came from Kepala Sapi (producer is unknown), Limas (by Lenggang, a fictitious producer in Salatiga), A.C.C (producer is unknown), Beef Jerky Lezaaat (MDC Food of Surabaya) and 999 (produced by S Hendropurnomo in Malang). Lezaaat even put a 'halal' (allowed for Muslims) label on its pack.***
