APRIL INFLATION UNDER CONTROL: BPS CHIEF
Jakarta, April 21 (ANTARA) - The head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Rusman Heriawan, said inflation this month could be managed well because the prices of essential commodities had remained under control.
Before attending a limited cabinet meeting on basic commodity prices and the inflation rate at the Presidential Office here on Tuesday, Heriawan said that the stable inflation rate and commodity prices this month reflected the stability of supply and demand.
But he did not disclose any figure on the inflation rate in April which was predicted to be lower than that a month earlier. "Last month it was recorded at 0.2 percent. Now, I think, it would at that rate. But let's wait for it," he said.
Heriawan said that the inflation rate was stable mainly was thanks to stable rice price. Rice supply could be maintained at a normal level in the January-April 2009 period, during which was the peak of the harvest season.
The BPS chief said that the prices of other commodity could follow the stability of rice price. "Food commodities are big factors in inflation," he added.
He said that usually the influence of food commodities was bigger than that of other groups of commodities and services such as clothes and transportation.
Heriawan said that the inflation rate in the last two months was expected to be lower than in the previous months, and there was even the possibility that deflation would occur.
"There could be deflation because gold price has dropped this month. Gold is a big component in the inflation," he added.
He said that recent legislative campaign activities caused inflation only on processed food and clothing material. It did not have effect on food raw material.
In March 2009, inflation happened on clothing due to increasing spending by political party on banners and T-shirts.***
