Korean restaurant selected among world's best by British magazine
SEOUL, April 22 (Yonhap) -- A fusion Korean restaurant in New York has been
selected as one of the world's best by more than 800 world food critics and
columnists, a British magazine said on its Web site Wednesday.
"Momofuku Ssam Bar," run by ethnic Korean David Chang, was ranked 31st in the
list of best 50 named by "Restaurant Magazine." The list, based on the vote by
837 food critics around the world, has been published each year since 2002.
Chang, who studied at the French Culinary Institute, has been earning fame in New
York for his restaurant serving Korean ssam -- rice, kimchi, pork and other
ingredients wrapped in lettuce -- as its main menu.
In 2007, the New York Times praised 30-year-old chef and owner Chang as a
"terrific cook whose integration of Asian flavors and unbound sense of what's
delectable make some deliriously enjoyable meals."
Low fat and based largely on vegetables, Korean food has been earning increasing
fame in the West with approximately 1,400 Korean restaurants in the United
States, 1,700 in Japan, 2,500 in China and 170 in Europe. The South Korean
government hopes to increase the number of Korean restaurants abroad to 40,000 by
2017.
