Government approves Yemen joining to UNCLOS Part XI

SANA'A, April 21 (Saba) - The government approved on Tuesday a memo
presented by transport minister on Yemen joining to the Part XI of
the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December
1982 (UNCLOS).

During its weekly meeting chaired by Ali Mujawar, the cabinet
directed the concerned ministers to complete constitutional measures
required to ratification the accession to the convention.

The explanatory memo of the convention briefed that Yemen accession
to the UNCLOS Part XI would make Yemen as a member in the
International Seabed Authority (ISA).

The Authority is required to give special emphasis to ensuring that
the marine environment is protected from any harmful effects which
may arise during mining activities, including exploration.

The principal function of the Authority is to regulate deep seabed
mining.
