DIN EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER MANOHARA'S FATE IN MALAYSIA

Jakarta, April 22 (ANTARA) - An Indonesian Islamic leader voiced concern here on Wednesday over the fate of Indonesian Manohara Odelia Pinot who had been treated badly by her Malaysian husband, a prince of Kelantan.

"We are concerned and disappointed upon hearing that the government would not intervene and the foreign ministry did nothing about it," Din Syamsuddin, the general chairman of one of the country's Islamic organizations Muhammadiyah, said.

He said the government through the ministry of foreign affairs and its representatives in that country as well as the police through the Interpol should have taken actions to protect its citizen who received violent treatment.

"After all, Malaysia is a neighbouring country and of a common stock so that the case could immediately be dealt with," he said.

Din also asked the National Commission on Women's Rights to participate in dealing with the case which was related to domestic violence.

Manohara, a young model, married Tengku Muhammad Fakhry, who is the prince of Kelantan, Malaysia, when she was only 16.

Her mother, Daisy Fajarina, said her daughter had been tortured including being slashed by a razor blade on her chest by her husband, had asked the government to intervene.

She denied that she had sold her daughter because the welfare life of her family remained unchanged after Manohara's marriage with the Malaysian prince.
