GOVT TO SUPPORT PRIVATE ENTERPRISES' REFORESTATION EFFORTS

Jakarta, April 22 (ANTARA) - The government will continue to support reforestation efforts being made by local as well as foreign companies to reduce global warming, a spokesman said.

"Reforestation efforts being made by local and foreign companies will continue to be supported by the government," Forestry Minister MS Kaban said in his written statement read out by director general of Land and Forest Rehabilitation Indriastuti after the launch of Go Green to mark the planting of thousands of trees in Indonesia on Wednesday.

Indriastuti said the government had already declared "one-man-one-tree" program in an effort to plant 100 million trees across the country.

She said the "one man one tree" program was responded positively by the people who have planted 109 million trees or more than the number which was declared by the government.

Therefore, she added that the effort to plant trees should continue in order to reduce global warming and water scarcity in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of PT Standard Chartered Bank Simon Morris said there were two ways in standard effort to plant trees.

First, the bank would allocate Rp10,000 from each of its credit card customers to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia for tree planting effort, and the second was that the bank would offer its credit card customers to exchange every 4,000 point of their reward point with a tree planted on behalf of their name.

He said Go Green activity was part of the Standard Chartered Bank seriousness in running its business in Indonesia.

According to Simon Morris, the bank since 2007 had given its significant contribution to environment by providing US$3.2 million to finance renewable energy projects and environmentally-friendly technology.

From 2006 to 2008, the Standard Charted Bank was able to reduce 14 percent of carbon dioxide emission.

Meanwhile, head of Consumern Banking Lani Darmawan said she had involved 10,000 customers in the first year of Go Green program to finance the planting of 2,000 trees in the first stage. ***2***
