GOLKAR SHOULD NOT WAVER : SENIOR CADRE
Jakarta, April 22 (ANTARA) - The Golkar Party should have no doubts in taking a political decision and should not merely think of having power, former Golkar secretary general Sarwono Kusumaatmadja said.
"If need be, Golkar should become an opposition party," Sarwono said in a dialog on coalition after the legislative elections at the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) building here on Wednesday.
He said political parties in Indonesia generally thought how to have power in the government. While in fact, becoming an opposition was no less respectable.
"Generally, no political parties are willing to become an opposition. PDIP took the opposition stand only because the background of its leaders' relations (with the ruling party leaders) is not so good," he said.
He said that to develop a political party there was no need to have power in the government. In turned out that being in the government over the past five years (Golkar) vote turnouts even fell in the 2009 legislative elections.
Therefore, Sarwono said, Golkar must have the courage to take risks. "If need be, Golkar has to become an opposition and in the coming five years it should carry out improvement and develop their cadres," he said.
The central board of Golkar in its meeting on Wednesday discussed the results of political communications its team had built with the Democratic Party (PD).
The meeting concluded that the political communications between the Golkar Party and the Democratic Party (PD) have failed to yield any accord towards a coalition.
"After a week of intensive political communications on continuing the SBY-JK government between Golkar and PD, the two parties have not been able to find a meeting point to form a coalition," Golkar Secretary General Sumarsono said.
Therefore, the Golkar central executive board gave the mandate to its chairman Jusuf Kalla to open new political communications with other political parties.***1***
