KALIMANTAN TO BECOME NATIONAL FOOD ISLAND
Pontianak, Apr 4 (ANTARA) - West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis has proposed an overall agricultural revitalization to develop Kalimantan into a national food island.
"Farming revitalization in its widest sense covers plantations, fisheries, forestry, animal husbandry, food crops and horticulture," said Cornelis who is also Coordinator of the Forum of Cooperation for the Revitalization and Acceleration of Regional Development in Kalimantan (FKRP2RK) on Wednesday.
The farming sector development is directed to the development of rural food storage facilities and pest control. While with regard to plantations, guidance is given to improve the quality of smallholer rubber.
In the forestry sector, the people living near and within forested areas will be empowered.
He also said that the different provinces in Kalimantan need to overcome several strategic problems with priority on infrastructure, human resources, economy, and zoning.
The building of the southern trans-Kalimantan highway in 2009 and the northern section of a national strategic highway, is expected to be started in 2010.
Furthermore, the Kalimantan power grid along the provincial trans highway needs to be carried out with political and commitment encouragement, so that it would be realized in 2010.
