15-M RIVER EMBANKMENT COLLAPSES BY FLASH FLOOD

Kudus, Apr 22 (ANTARA) - A flash flood devoured scores of houses in Mejobo and Jekulo subdistricts after the right 15 meters of the embankment of River Piji in Kesambi village, Mejobo subdistrict, Kudus regency, Central Java, caved in small hours of Wednesday.

Some of the local residents said the collapse of the river embankment followed heavy rains, raising the surface of the river significantly.

Eventually, the embankment collapsed at 4.30 a.m local time, and the water rushed down on the houses.

But the flash flood which lasted about 30 minutes, did not cause serious damage to the houses.

Right now, the occupants of the houses hit by the flash flood were cleaning their homes from mud.

Some people said the area was highly prone to such disasters, in addition to Jati and Jekulo subdistricts.
