Jakarta, April 23 (ANTARA) - Marine and Fishery Minister Freddy Numberi reported to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Wednesday that some 4,000 participants from 121 countries would take part in the upcoming World Ocean Conference (WOC).

Besides, six heads of state have confirmed their participation in the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit which would also be held in Manado, North Sulawesi, on May 15, 2009.
CTI has six member countries, namely the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Solomon Island. Australia and the United States are observers of CTI.

Indonesia as initiator of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) is hoping it could host its secretariat.

"As we are an initiator, we are seeking to make the secretariat to be set up in Indonesia," Numberi said.

The coral reef triangle that covers the six countries is 75,000 square kilometers wide and has 500 coral reef species and more than 3,000 fish species.

The coral reefs in the area are also a source of livelihood for 120 population, and a place of tuna mating and a source of regional economy with money in circulation reaching US$2.3 billion a year.

North Sulawesi is known by the world for its Bunaken marine park. The region's other ecotourist potential is its underwater volcano.
