M'SIAN PM DEEMS RELATIONS WITH RI IMPORTANT

Jakarta, April 23 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Malaysia have close and important bilateral relations in various sectors, visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib bin Hj. Tun Abdul Razak said here on Thursday.

Najib Razak made the statement at a joint press conference with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono after a bilateral meeting at Merdeka Palace.

"I really appreciate the close and important bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia," Prime Minister Najib Razak said after an honorary call to President Yudhoyono.

Najib Razak is on a two-day state visit to Indonesia from April 22-23, 2009, or the first ever visit after being inaugurated as Malaysian prime minister to replace Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on April 3, 2009.

Meanwhile, President Yudhoyono said various issues were discussed at the bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Najib Razak this time.

"We have agreed to develop mutual beneficial cooperation in various sectors between the two countries," President Yudhoyono said.

The president said that in economic sector, the trade volume between the two countries continued to increase in the past two years with US$15.3 billion in 2008 and US$ 11.5 billion in the previous year.

Yudhoyono said Indonesia and Malaysia as the world's largest palm-oil producing countries would also cooperate in oil palm plantation sector.

While in defense field, Yudhoyono said that besides continuing joint security operation at Malacca Strait, Indonesia and Malaysia would step up cooperation in defense industry.

He said Malaysia also offered cooperation in medical tourism.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said earlier that besides bipartite meeting with President Yudhoyono, Najib Razak would also meet with Vice President Jusuf Kalla, People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Hidayat Nurwahid, and House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono.

In his visit to Indonesia this time, Najib Razak was accompanied by a number of Malaysian government officials such as foreign affairs minister, defense minister, trade minister, transportation minister, home affairs minister, agriculture minister and manpower minister.

Before becoming Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak frequently came to Indonesia in his capacity as deputy prime minister in his bid to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
