OBSERVING EARTH DAY WVI PLANTS 7,200 SEEDLINGS

Jayapura, Papua, April 23 (ANTARA)- On the occasion of observing World Earth Day on April 22, 2009, Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) had been engaged in environmental rehabilitation activities in Jayapura along with the local population.

In a press release in Jayapura on Wednesday, Manager of WVI Roriwo Kretji said in the past two years more than 7,200 seedlings had been planted in 21 points prone to floods, landslides, and abrasions, as well as in areas of sources of water in Jayapura.

And since 2006 WVI along with the local population had been identifying sensitive points and familiarized the local population with its working program.

The crops planted consisted of casuarine trees, white teak, cacao, rambutan, and almond.

Jayapura has often been hit by environmental damage following frequent floods and landslides which had taken the lives of at least 15 people.

This can be prevented by conserving the environment, preserving the protected forests, and conserving clean water sources.

Earth Day is a reminder changes in movements of care for the environment initiated in 1970 by an American senator, Gaylord Nelson.
