PARTY COALITIONS URGED NOT TO FORGET RIGHTS AGENDA
Jakarta, April 23 (ANTARA) - Political party coalitions in the run up to the presidential election should not be separated from the human rights agenda, Suciwati, wife of late human rights activist Munir, said here on Thursday.
"Whatever party coalitions are to be formed, they should not be separated from the human rights agenda," Suciwati said in a press conference at the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) office on Borobudur street, Central Jakarta.
On the occasion she asserted that the political parties should have moral ethics and commitment to human rights enforcement by avoiding coalescing with the party which had an indication of human rights violation.
Suciwati also expressed hope that the political parties officials did not build coalition just to have the power in the government.
Meanwhile, Sipon, the wife of kidnapped activists in 1997-1998 Wiji Thukul, read a joint statement from human rights solidarity network, saying the political parties should shun human rights violators.
According to Sipon, it was because the power should be built on people's interest in the fulfillment of security, justice, and truth.
"We hope the coalition which is to be built by the political parties will not be limited to power sharing but be based on joint agenda, namely human rights enforcement to fulfill the economic, social and culture, and political rights," Sipon said.
