S. Korean lab to set up R&D center in Germany
DAEJEON, April 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's leading state-run laboratory said
Friday it signed a deal to set up an information technology (IT) research center
in Germany.
The Daejeon-based Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)
said the memorandum of understanding with Technische Universitat Darmstadt could
help develop Internet protocol television (IPTV) and next-generation network
technologies.
"The Hessen-based university proposed the tie-up, which is a sign that ETRI's
expertise in the IT sector is winning recognition," a spokesperson said.
The laboratory has played in key role in South Korea's rapid emergence as a
global IT power and has helped develop core technologies in mobile
telecommunications, displays, ultra high-speed data transfers and sensors.
He added that operating a research and development center in Hessen, which is
home to global IT, software and telecommunications companies, could be a
springboard into the rest of Europe.
ETRI and its German counterpart plan to research so-called green ICT, ICT
convergence and manufacturing, IPTV, contents software development and ubiquitous
computing.
Technology developed could be sold in Europe, with the lab permitted to engage in
commercial operations that strengthen its presence in the market.
