ALL GOVT OFFICIALS ASKED TO ACT AS RI TOURISM PROMOTERS

Jakarta, April 25 (ANTARA) - All government officials, including ministers and state institution chiefs, are expected to play a role as an Indonesian tourism promotion agent, a minister said.

"We have distributed circulars to all ministers and state institution leaders asking them to diligently promote Indonesia as a host country of international events," Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said here on Saturday.

Jero Wacik said the international events could be in the form of meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions, and even sport and music performances.

He said the circulars had been sent to all cabinet ministers with copies for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"To President Yudhoyono, we asked that if there will be an international meeting but no country was ready to host it, he can propose Indonesia to be the host country," he said.

The minister added that the upcoming presidential election should not be a moment that halted tourism-related activities in the country.

"We have to make the general election a democratic program but it should not halt other activities," Jero Wacik said.

But he expressed hope that the upcoming presidential election on July 8 this year would proceed in a safe and peaceful atmosphere and make foreign tourists interested in visiting Indonesia even more.

Jero Wacik said that in the runup to the presidential election, a number of major international events would take place in Indonesia.

They included the Tour de Singkarak, Asian Development Bank Meeting, Trail of Civilization 2009 (TOC 2009), World Ocean Conference 2009 (WOC 2009), Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), the 5th Conference of the World Guangdong Community Federation, and the nomination of world marketing experts Philip Kotler and Hermawan Kartajaya as Indonesian Tourism envoys.

He said those events were expected to encourage the success of Visit Indonesia Year 2009 with its target of attracting 6.5 million foreign tourists to Indonesia.***
