S. Korean Q1 auto-exports nearly halve amid economic downturn
SEOUL, April 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korean car exports almost halved in the first quarter from a year earlier as the global economic downturn pummeled overseas demand, a local carmakers' association said Sunday.
The total value of outbound car shipments by local manufacturers stood at US$4.37
billion in the January-March period, down 47.4 percent from the same period last
year, according to data by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association.
The number of overseas car sales fell 36.5 percent during the cited period to
reach 436,285, the data showed.
The plunge came as overseas consumers tightened purse strings amid the global
economic slowdown.
The decrease in sales measured in value was sharper than the overall drop in
numbers, as more shoppers opted for smaller cars, an official of the association
said, adding, "The auto industry is only waiting for an economic turnaround to
boost demand of full-sized or sport-utility vehicles."
