Korea's online bank trading tops 10 qdl won in 2008
SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's electronic banking transactions
surpassed the 10-quadrillion-won (US$7.45 trillion) mark in volume for the first
time last year as people increasingly went online to make financial transactions,
the financial watchdog said Monday.
The volume of online banking transactions reached 11.67 quadrillion won in 2008,
up 18.9 percent from the previous year, the Financial Supervisory Service said.
Last year marked the first time that such volume surpassed the 10-quadrillion-won
level since September 1998 when the Internet banking was introduced, according to
the service.
Meanwhile, the volume of online securities transactions came in at 6,078 trillion
won last year, up 6.4 percent from a year earlier on increased trading of futures
and options, the watchdog said.
South Korea is one of the most wired nations in the world, with over two-thirds
of its people using high-speed Internet.
