Hynix develops world's fastest memory chip for mobile devices
SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc. announced Monday that it has
developed the world's fastest memory chip for mobile devices.
Mass production of the 1-gigabit low power DDR2 chip will begin in the third
quarter of this year, applying 54-nanometer technology, the company said. A
nanometer is one-billionth of a meter.
DDR2 is an advanced version of DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, used in the
manufacture of memory chips.
The newly developed chip, designed for mobile Internet devices, netbooks and
high-end smartphones, boasts a maximum operating speed of 1,066 megabits per
second, compared to 800 megabits for existing mobile DDR2 chips.
The technology also consumes less power, operating on a 1.2 volt power supply,
reducing energy consumption by 50 percent compared to other mobile memory chips.
Hynix said it will try to achieve a 24 percent stake in the world's mobile memory
chip market this year with the new chip. Its market share in the world's mobile
DRAM market was 12 percent last year.
The company also said it will aim at developing the 1-gigabit lower power DDR2
chip using 40-nanometer technology early next year.
