Collection of English letters by first S. Korean president published
SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- A collection of English letters written by South
Korea's first president, Syngman Rhee (1875-1965), to such high-profile
recipients as U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and French Premier Georges
Clemenceau, has been published, said Seoul's Yonsei University.
"The Syngman Rhee Correspondence in English" features more than 3,100 English
letters exchanged between Rhee and renowned local and international figures from
1904 through 1948, Yonsei, which published the book, said in a press release.
The eight-volume collection holds reprints of real letters, including those Rhee
exchanged with Dr. Underwood, who started his career as an English lecturer at
Yonhui College, predecessor of Yonsei University, in 1939.
The letters were donated to the university in 1997 by Rhee In-su, an adopted son
of the late president.
