LG Electronics to supply modem chips to NTT DoCoMo
SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- LG Electronics Co., the world's fifth-largest handset
maker, said Monday that it has become a modem chip supplier for Japan's largest
mobile operator NTT DoCoMo Inc.
The company's long-term evolution (LTE) modem chips will be shipped to NTT DoCoMo
for its next generation wireless service, starting next year, LG Electronics
said, without disclosing details including the date of the shipment.
LG Electronics developed its long-term evolution (LTE) modem chip last December,
which the company expects to succeed the current third-generation wireless
technology as a global standard.
The LTE technology, which can download a 700-megabit feature-length film in a
minute, is a leading candidate to become the fourth-generation wireless
technology standard for mobile phones, according to the South Korean company.
The technology is expected to be in full commercial use in 2010 to be used
alongside the current third-generation WCDMA wireless standard.
According to market research company Strategy Analytics, global sales of LTE
handsets will reach 70 million units in 2012 and expand to 150 million units by
2013.
