ASEAN URGED TO AGREE ON EXTRADITION AND INFORMATION TRANSPARENCY
Kuala Lumpur, Apr 27 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian delegation to the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on prevention of narcotic trade and human trafficking has asked for a resolution that all Asean member countries agreed to extradition and information transparency.
"The absence of an agreement on extradition and information transparency, prevention of narcotic trade and human trafficking will be carried out half-heartedly," said Marzuki Darusman, foreign affairs commission of the House of Representatives representing Indonesia at the first AIPA Caucus at the Malaysian parliamentary building in Kuala Lumpur said Monday.
"We we are urging a harmonization of Asean laws with a view to achieving an Asean Community in 2015, but ratification and verification of Asean laws would not be effective without urging the member countries to jointly apply extradition and information transparency," he said.
For harmonizing Asean laws, Marzuki added, it would be necessary to have information transparency and access among the Asean member countries to the laws or legal proceedings in the prevention of narcotic trade and human trafficking.
The country which is the worst hit by narcotic trade and human trafficking has the right to have the suspects tried by its court. It is therefore of utmost importance for the AIPA caucus to issue a resolution on the need for extradition and information transparency among the Asean member countries.
The 28th AIPA general meeting in Kuala Lumpur agreed on the need for the formation of an AIPA caucus. The 29th AIPA general meeting in Singapore reached agreement that the first caucus be held in the Malaysian capital to discuss the prevention of narcotic trade and human trafficking.
