GOVT CONSIDERING ISSUING LAW TO CUT REGIONAL ELECTION'S FREQUENCY
Palembang, S Sumatra, April 27 (ANTARA) - The government is considering to draft a new law or regulation on regional chief election law in an effort to reduce the frequency of elections that might cause tiresome among voters, a minister said.
"The large proportion of election abstainers in the April 9, 2009 legislative elections could have been caused by tiredness among voters who had already taken part in regional head elections," Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto said here on Monday.
He said that it was suspected that voters got bored of the elections, particularly regional head elections, which were too often held so that the number of abstainers in the recent legislative elections was relatively high.
The minister said that the other problem that could cause the high abstainers rate was the many number of voters who were not register on the fixed voters' lists.
In this case, the regional governments' role, particularly that of neighborhood chiefs, in providing information for residents was needed. They were needed to information voters that the legislative and presidential elections were held only once in five years, the minister said.
Neighborhood chiefs should be more active in making inventories of their residents so that they would all have the chance to cast their votes and channel their aspirations.
The government has organized a legislative election on April 9, 2009 where a total of 38 political parties vying for 560 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR). It will hold a presidential poll on July 8, 2009.***1***
