PRESIDENT ORDERS SWIFT ACTIONS TO PREVENT SWINE FLU
Jakarta, April 27 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for swift and correct measures to deal with the potential spread of swine flu that has broken out in Mexico and the US.
He held a special meeting at his office on Monday to discuss the issue, attended by Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafei Djamal.
At the meeting Yudhoyono emphasized the importance of checking all flight passengers from the US and Mexico as the disease could potentially spread from human movement.
"We must take swift and correct actions. We must really start to do everything necessary, including controlling and checking planes from the US and Mexico as well as other countries that have been contaminated by the disease," he said.
The president had also asked all the ministries concerned not to treat the matter lightly although it had not yet spread to Asia. To the health minister he appealed to take anticipatory measures so that the people were prepared in case the disease spread to the country.
He said however that the moves must not be overdone so as not to cause panic. "We do it as usual but everyone must be prepared," he said.
Aburizal Bakrie meanwhile said the government was prepared to anticipate the disease through simulations that had been carried out when dealing with bird flu.
As the death rate in bird flu cases was higher than in swine flu cases he said simulations for dealing with bird flu were considered sufficient.
Siti Fadilah Supari meanwhile said that tamiflu could also be used to treat swine flue.***
