RI NAVY INTERCEPTS ILLEGAL FISHING BOAT

Surabaya, E Java, April 27 (ANTARA)- The Indonesian naval ship "KRI Layang 805" recently intercepted an Indonesia-flagged boat, the "KM Hasil Union Abadi", carrying 60 tons of fish illegally, a navy spokesman said.

Lt Col Tony Syaful, information officer of the Indonesian Navy's Eastern Fleet Command, said in a press statement here Monday the fishing boat was captured in Eastern Indonesia waters on Friday (April 24).

"The KRI Layang 805 commanded by Maj Rudi Aviantara was conducting a patrol in the Aru Sea when it encountered KM Hasil Union Abadi which was catching fish," he said.

The KM Hasil Union Abadi was behaving suspiciously, prompting Aviantara to approach the fishing boat for an inspection. The 127-gross-ton boat proved to have a crew of 26 consisting of 24 Indonesians and two foreigners from China and Taiwan.

The names of 16 of the boat's crew members, including its skipper, Suyanto, were not mentioned in the boat's official personel roster, he said.

"The absence of the names of the 16 crew members from the boat's official personnel roster was a violation of martime rules," Saiful quoted the KRI Layang 805 commander as saying. ***4***
