INDONESIA TO SEND SPECIAL TROOPS TO LEBANON
Jakarta, Apr 27 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian military (TNI) will send a company of special troops to join the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
"We hope every thing will run smoothly so that they can carry out the UN mandate well. In this regard, every thing will be coordinated with all relevant parties because the despatch of troops there will require a lot of support," Chief of the TNI Information Center Rear Marshal Sagom Tamboen said on Monday.
He said the TNI was very grateful for the UN's trust to be part of its peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. "But we will continue to consider it more maturely because it is related to our preparedness as a whole, not only in terms of personnel and military armament system," he said.
Separately, on Monday, Fikry Cassidy, deputy director of international security and disarmament at the foreign ministry, said the UN had filed a formal request to the Indonesian government for the dispatch of a company of special troops to Lebanon.
The company of special troops is expected to depart for Lebanon in May. "But we still have to finalize all these particularly those related to support for our personnel and military armament system," he said.
To date, 1,245 Indonesian troops are joining UNIFIL which has a total of 13,000 troops from 28 countries. "Indonesia is the third largest country in terms of troops joining UNIFIL," Fikry said.
