MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES START RECOVERING : MINISTER

Jakarta, April 27 (ANTARA) - Indonesian manufacturing industries are starting to recover, according to acting Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs concurrently Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.

"Electricity consumption increased very sharply in March, 2009, showing that manufacturing industrial activities are starting to recover," she said.

She said according to several indicators or information she had received from the field car purchases have already begun to be done by advance orders.
"It means stocks are already exhausted and the industry has started producing again," she said.

The minister predicted growth in the manufacturing sector in the second quarter of 2009 would be more encouraging than in the first quarter.

"The second quarter is expected to be better because the first quarter was a reaction to the fourth quarter of 2008 when demand dropped sharply to make producers stop production for fear stocks will rise," she said.

She said around March 2009 the growth of the manufacturing sector was improving, supported by high consumption.

"They (producers) start seeing that their stocks are decreasing so that they start producing again. So I think the second quarter will not be worse and even be better than the first quarter," she said.

Regarding the financial service industry, the minister said it had been corrected so that it was increasingly careful with regard to facing the crisis.

"Perhaps, they start to slow down their credit expansion program," she said.
