PRESIDENT HOPES STABILITY MAINTAINED AHEAD OF JULY ELECTION
Jakarta, April 27 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all parties here on Monday to keep maintaining stability and security in the country ahead of the presidential election on July 8.
In his speech at a meeting with the National Tripartite Cooperation Institute at the palace, Yudhoyono called on all parties to learn a lesson from the riots in 1998 that claimed many lives to avoid the occurrence of a similar crisis.
"If stability is disrupted because of rioting and chaos like in 1998, many companies will shut down, businesses will be unable to operate, economic activity will stop. What happens next is lay-offs and those hit hard will be people at the grassroots," he said.
He said the tragedy that happened 11 years ago must be taken as a lesson by all parties to make them more mature in politics.
President Yudhoyono said he believed, after the General Elections Commission (KPU) had formally announced the results of the legislative elections, the political atmosphere in the country would no doubt heat up in relation with the presidential election to be held in July.
"Following the political dynamics I hope and wish that we can all maintain stability across the country," he said.
He hoped that the election as a regular five-yearly democratic exercise could be carried out in a way reflecting national maturity.
He said the people had actually already shown maturity following the implementation of the legislative elections recently that had proceeded peacefully and orderly.
