Vice President will sign new safety rules for workers' accommodation: Ghobash

Abu Dhabi, April 28, 2009 (WAM) - Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum will sign a draft resolution on criteria for workers' accommodation, Minister of Labour HE Saqr Ghobash said yesterday.
“These requirements will be circulated to all municipalities across the country so as to enforce them on housing facilities of workers,'' the minister told a seminar on labour and human rights opened yesterday in Dubai. The event is organised by the Ministry of Labour in association with the International Labour Organization's Regional Office for Arab States and the UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights.
“The criteria will provide adequate hygienic and human conditions for the comfort of workers. The government will not accept less than those conditions,” he affirmed.
Speaking about protection of salaries of workers, the minister said the UAE had gone a long way in this regards and the next few coming weeks would see the emergence of the electronic payment of workers' salaries, a joint initiative between the ministry, banks, money exchange houses and the Central Bank of the UAE.
“The project, a core element in the ministry's strategy, will cut the way on any delay in payment of salaries and unjustifiable dedications. Initially, about 500,000 workers will take advantage of this important project,” he said.
He announced that the ministry issued 662,000 labour cards and cancelled 405,000 in the six months from October 2008 up to March 2009.
“This means that incoming workers continued to outnumber departing peers. The workforce rose by 27 and 32 per cent in 2007 and 2008 respectively thanks to the current construction boom in the country. “The UAE will not accept under any circumstance abuse of rights of workers living on its soil. The political leadership doesn't tolerate any breach of law and is keen to comply with and enforce international labour conventions,” he emphasised.
