GOVT PREPARING RP40 BILLION FOR SWINE FLU HANDLING
Jakarta, April 28 (ANTARA) - The government is allocating Rp40 billion to cope with the possible spread of swine flu in Indonesia, Director General for Animal Husbandry Tjeppy D Soedjana said.
"The funds are taken from the bird flu handling budget made sometime in the past," the director general said here on Tuesday.
Soedjana said the funds were now being kept by the office of the people's welfare coordinating ministry.
"One of the results of the meeting with the coordinating minister for people's welfare on Monday mentioned that the Rp40 billion needs to be disbursed immediately," he said.
He said that the Rp40 billion would be used to carry out activities such as those carried out to overcome the spread of bird flu in the country such as surveillance activities.
"We carry out activities like those done in handling bird flu cases. If the funds are not enough, additional funds can be made," he added.
He said that other efforts made included banning imports of pigs from swine-affected countries.
According to the director general, Indonesia is estimated to import 100 to 3,000 tons of pig meat annually. In 2008 it was recorded at 2,600 tons.
Following the World Health Organization (WHO)'s declaration of the swine influenza outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern (PHIC), President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday called for swift and correct measures to deal with its potential spread.
As preventive measures, Indonesia also installed swine flu surveillance devices in ten entry points of airports and seaports. "We must take swift and correct actions. We must really start to do everything necessary, including controlling and checking planes from the US and Mexico as well as other countries that have been contaminated by the disease," President Yudhoyono told an unscheduled limited cabinet meeting on Monday.***2***
