Swimmer Park Tae-hwan set to compete at U.S. tournament

SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- Beijing Olympic swimming gold medalist Park Tae-hwan
will compete in a U.S. tournament next month, giving the star swimmer a chance to
assess his performance ahead of a major event two months later, his agent here
said Wednesday.

"Park will compete at the 2009 Janet Evans Invitational in Irvine, California,
May 22 to 24," SK Telecom Sports Team said.
Park, who seized the 400m men's freestyle gold and the 200m silver in Beijing
last year, headed to the U.S. earlier this month for a second round of overseas
training at the University of Southern California with Dave Salo, who has
coached a number of American Olympic medalists.
He will vie in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle competitions at the tournament
before heading to compete in the world championship in Rome, according to the
agent. One of his key rivals will be Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli, who won the
1500m freestyle gold in Beijing.
Park, 19, is aiming for another gold in the 400m freestyle and a new personal
record in the 1500m competition in Rome.
