INDONESIANS OVERSEAS ALERTED AGAINST SWINE FLU
Jakarta, April 29 (ANTARA) - The Foreign Ministry called on Indonesians staying overseas or traveling through Mexico and North American regions, or countries prone to swine flu or hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) to exercise cautions on possible infection of the diseases.
The call was made by the Foreign Ministry's Directorate General for Indonesian Citizen Protection here on Wednesday following the spread of swine flu disease in Mexico and North American regions where about 100 people had been killed and over 1,000 other infected.
At the same time, the HFMD disease, which is known in Indonesia as Singapore flu, had also spread sporadically in a number of densely populated Asian countries.
The government called on its citizens to avoid non-essential trips to affected countries or changed their traveling routes, until the swine flu spread was overcome.
The government also advised those staying in Mexico and North American regions or countries prone to HFMD disease, to equip themselves with masks, gloves and other needed health devices.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, no Indonesian citizens overseas have been reported to be infected with swine flu virus.
The ministry registered a total of 3,147,211 Indonesians staying overseas of which 309 are in Mexico and 50,731 in the United States.
The Indonesian government is taking seven steps to prevent the swine flu virus from breaking out in the country.
One of the steps is installing thermal scanners at international airports, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said in a circular read out by president director of Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Prof Dr Cissy RS Prawira, to newsmen on Tuesday (April 28).
The other steps include reactivating around 80 sentinels for surveillance on ILI (influenza-like illnesses) and pneumonia both in clinical or virological forms and preparing medicines for overcoming the disease.
In Mexico, swine flu is believed to have killed 149 people while 776 others have been hospitalized, according to Mexican government statistics. The number of infections in the United States rose to 65, Canada has 13, and new cases were also confirmed in Israel and New Zealand.
