BALI TO HOST CONGRESS ON AIDS

Denpasar, April 29 (ANTARA) - Bali is to host the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) on August 9-13 this year.

"The congress on August will be attended by AIDS experts, observers, and victims from various countries," ICAAP organizing committee chairman Prof Dewa Nyoman Wirawan said here on Wednesday.

He said the congress, scheduled to be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, would be held for the participants to exchange views on matters related to HIV/AIDS epidemic happening in Asia-Pacific countries.

At least 5,000 participants from at least ten countries in the congress would also exchange views on ways to cure such a kind of disease.

Nyoman Wirawan said the committee had appointed two locations, namely the area around Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue at Jimbaran hill, and Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua, Badung district, as the venue of the congress.

On a separate occation, Badung district head AA Gde Agung said he would positively welcome and support the process of the congress on HIV/AIDS management effort.

To ensure security during the congress, the Badung district head said coordination and communication would be made between the organizing committee and security personnel from Bali police and Udayana Military Command.

Gde Agung has asked that before the congress was conducted, it should be familiarized to the local people.

"The familiarization should be made carefully and accurately in order to avoid misunderstanding which is feared to influence the image of tourism in Bali, Gde Agung said.

Meanwhile, Badung deputy district head I Ketut Sudikerta who is also the chairman of Badung Regional AIDS Management Commission (KPAD) said he would support the congress.

Through the congress, he said, the participants would exchange views on HIV/AIDS management in addition to supporting tourism in Bali.
